Is social media encouraging teen dating violence?
Over the weekend, I cam across a video on YouTube (viewer discretion advised) of a girl playing a break up prank on her boyfriend. Instead of taking the prank like a good sport he proceeds to punch her in the face relentlessly. There are even other people around but no one steps end to stop him. After the video went viral, the girl made a series of social media post addressing the incident by saying things like, "if he doesn't hit you, he doesn't love you," and "It was my fault, I played the prank,". People were actually in the comments defending the relationship. This isn't even the worst of it. Countless videos are posted on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter and go viral, glorifying these toxic teen relationships. Whether it be name calling or stalking behavior or physical abuse, it seems like social media has shaped this new idea of love and unfortunately, this generation of teens have decided to just run with it.
